Who am I? Why do I do what I do?

If you’ve come to visit my site and my blog you might already know a little about me. If you’re new here then WELCOME!

My name is Kimberly and these are my people. They are WHY I do what I do.

I am a wife and mom to 3 very active kids ranging in age from kindergarten up to driver-in training. They keep me busy with sports practices and games and boy scout events. My husband is a math teacher and together we live in a small town in Central Illinois.

I have worked in the medical field for 24 years, working in a hospital and on-site imaging center. I do love what I do, but I have definitely seen a different side of “heath”care lately and it has been quite eye opening and disheartening.

Our healthcare system in the United States is broken. For SO MANY reasons. Our doctors are trained in the art of managing symptoms. We give them our list of symptoms, they give us a script and then send us out the door. But what about the ROOT CAUSES of those symptoms?!? Talk to us about our diet that is lacking in nutrients. Talk to us about our sedentary lifestyle. Talk to us about our sleep habits. Talk to us about the toxins we have in our homes that are making us sick. If we discussed those things FIRST and tackled them, think about how different our stories would be!

If we were eating a balanced diet with limited processed foods think about how much better we would feel. If we were getting a full 7-8 hours of sleep each night think about how rested and energetic we would feel. If we moved our bodies regularly think about how much fewer aches and pains we would have. If we got rid of the toxins in our homes….. This is where my story begins.

I had suffered with migraines since I was about 13 years old. I have had countless MRI’s and CT’s of my brain over the years which, thankfully, were always normal. Typically I could go to bed in a dark and quiet room and sleep it off, but occasionally it would require a trip to the ER when the migraine was just too much and wouldn’t subside after a couple days. I would get a shot of pain meds and head on home to recover. This went on until I was in my mid 30’s. I lived on ibuprofen and ate them like candy nearly every single day because even if I didn’t have a migraine that day I almost certainly had a “regular” headache.

One day I was doing some housework and I started noticing a black residue on places throughout our house. I noticed it on the toilet seats in the bathrooms and even on some of the white dishes that were inside the kitchen cabinets. Honestly it took a couple days for reality to sink in that it was soot from the candles I was constantly burning. I was a sucker for a vanilla or fall scented candle and I had them burning ALL the time.

Up to this point in my life, I’m sad to admit, I rarely gave a thought to the products I brought into our home. I would just walk up and down the cleaner aisle and throw in what we needed. I bought the scented laundry detergent, fabric softener and dryer sheets. I bought all of the room sprays, fabric sprays and smelly plug-ins. I bought candles in bulk for every room in the house.

But as I thought about the black residue I had discovered, something inside my brain asked….If these candles are leaving a black residue on our dishes, what might they be doing to our lungs?!? That was the first time I questioned our lifestyle and I can say with certainty that that one question changed my life forever.

I know that sounds dramatic but that one question was a catalyst, it’s like it turned something on inside my brain. I decided to ditch the candles immediately. At first I switched to the wax warmers because they didn’t produce any soot and I was still able to get the smell I loved. But what about the other ingredients in the wax warmers? Something was giving me that heavenly smell and I seriously doubted there was any REAL ingredients in the wax. I immediately ditched the wax warmers too. And that my friends was the beginning of something wonderful. I noticed a change in my headaches. It wasn’t drastic but it was a noticeable change for the better.

Being open to trying new things is important

At about this same time my sister was harping on me to try some of these essential oils she had started using. I was a medical and science person and using “hippie” oils for my ailments just wasn’t something I was open to. I told her no several times but she kept pushing, so I finally agreed to take a bottle home with me. Peppermint oil. For head discomfort? Yeah, right. (insert eye roll). That little brown bottle sat in the cabinet for a couple months until one day I had a headache and decided to give it a try. I tried to remember what she had told me to do with it…rub some on my temples and forehead and base of the skull. Within minutes I could tell a difference. Literally minutes.

Peppermint was my “gateway oil”. I used it over and over again with the same positive results. I no longer needed so many pills. I was ecstatic. I began learning more about these “hippie” oils and through that I learned about the PURITY of essential oils and how important that was, how important it was to not have any synthetics or fillers or other toxins in the oils that I was putting on my body. This is where the brainwork came in again. If I wanted PURE oils, free of toxins, then what about all of the products I had in the house that were FULL of toxins?? I did a massive sweep through the house looking through all of the cabinets and shelves for anything that had the words “fragrance” in the ingredient list. HOLY SMOKES it was in everything! I began searching for natural products on the stores shelves but really came up empty.

Thankfully this same company that had the Peppermint oil, doTerra, also had some products that could be used in the home for cleaning. I figured if they were so strict about the purity of the oils they were probably just as strict with the ingredients in their other products, so that’s where I started. I ditched my store-bought products and began using their cleaning products. I also started using fragrance-free detergent and ditched the dryer sheets, which I later discovered is one of the most toxic things you can have in your house.

Small changes with big rewards

After getting rid of some of the toxin-FULL products and candles in our home my migraines stopped. Just like that. I would have a rare migraine occasionally, I believe hormonal, but the constant migraines were gone. The daily “regular” headaches were also gone. I could NOT believe it. This lit a fire in me to know more about doTerra and what other products they had that might be able to help me and my growing family. I wanted my children and their growing bodies to not have a constant barrage of toxins while they were at home. I couldn’t change what they are exposed to outside of the house but I could definitely make better choices for them while they are inside our house. I wanted better options for them.

If you know better, you can (and should) do better

This began my journey to find natural solutions. I can confidently say I have swapped out about 95% of the products in our home for better alternatives. I feel so strongly and passionately about it that I want to tell EVERYONE who will listen (and even some who don’t) about doTerra and what their products can do to change lives. I want to help people know that they can be empowered to make better choices for their families. We can all take control of our own HEALTHCARE because by making these simple choices we are reducing the inflammation in our bodies. We are reducing brain fog and fatigue. We are getting better sleep. We are helping to support our respiratory system, our immune system, our neurological system, our GI system and ALL the other systems. We are reducing our risk of cancer! We have to take control of our healthcare because the system is broken and no one is going to do it for us.

This is my journey. This is my passion and my mission. After 24 years of working in the medical field and watching myself, loved ones and patients I take care of suffer from things that are most definitely caused by lifestyle choices, I feel a need to shout it from the rooftops that THERE IS A BETTER WAY. Let me help you find a better way for your family.
